The Master's programme in Economics is an academic programme that equips you with the essential tools of economics at an advanced level, and teaches you how to apply these principles to important, real-life policy tasks. The programme focuses on economic issues and policy orientation and aims to turn you into economic generalists, while offering you the possibility to become specialists in well-defined focus areas (specialisations). The programme aims at developing and testing your economic intuition and analytical skills, emphasizing policy orientation and empirical applicability.

Applicants must be in possession of:

the degree of Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Economics with at least Second Class Honours or
the degree of Bachelor of Commerce with Economics as one of the two main areas of study, obtained with at least Category II or
a degree with at least Second Class Honours or Category II, in any other area deemed relevant by the Board of Studies.

Students admitted under paragraphs (b) and (c) may be required to follow and pass supplementary study-unit/s, as recommended by the Board of Studies, to which a maximum of 12 ECTS credits are assigned, in addition to the programme of study.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2025-26 and continue up to the end of Semester 1 of academic year 2026-27.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science in Economics under the auspices of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.

After completion of the course, you will be able to:

know the main defining principles, theoretical concepts, and tools in modern advanced microeconomics and macroeconomics, and possess applicable knowledge of core empirical tools and their statistical foundations.
possess and develop analytical skills that will help you apply appropriate mathematical and empirical modelling tools for finding answers to pertinent social and economic problems.
develop a feel for what makes a good and useful model and in what context to use it.
read and understand important contributions to the literature of general economic analysis and of selected subfields and will have become critical readers.
identify relevant economic issues, formulate appropriate research questions, and implement a plan for answering their question.
work with empirical economic data and will know how to translate economic hypotheses into statistical hypotheses. You will know how to apply statistical testing methodology and will be capable of drawing conclusions.

Since the M.Sc. programme aims to increase your generalist and specialist knowledge and understanding of economic theories, tools and academic competences, commensurate with the academic standards required in a Masters' programme, this will be a great opportunity for you to gain recognition and further your career aspirations as an economist both in local and international organisations.
